Love Yourself: Live, Laugh and Love Your Way to a Better You
Healthy habits are essential to not just surviving, but thriving in life. Since February is the Month of Love, we’re encouraging you to work on self-love and self-care – the starting point to becoming the best version of yourself you can be.
Self-care is definitely a trending buzzword, but it’s so important to find ways to take care of your mind, body and soul – because all those parts make up who you are. Neglecting any one of them can impact your quality of life. Research has suggested that simple daily self-care practices can improve your overall sense of wellbeing.
These 3 simple growth areas will help you practice self-care for a healthier you:
Our culture promotes the quest for productivity; the need to run around, be overly busy and get things done. But sometimes we forget to make time for the little moments where we can just enjoy life.
For some, this might mean something as simple as pausing to breathe deeply and be silent for 5 to 10 minutes a day. A daily “stop and smell the roses” moment, if you will. For others, it could mean making time to do something new and exciting with your family.
Whatever “living” looks like to you, write it down and make time for it this year. Here are some suggestions.
Experience something new
Most of us love experiencing new things. We just don’t always know what, when and where. Sometimes trying to select something new to do on the fly creates unnecessary anxiety.
So why not pick a couple of friends who are keen to try new things with you? Get recommendations from friends and family for coffee shops, eateries, child-friendly venues, markets, novelty activities and parks.
Make a top 5 list and make plans to visit at least 2 places per month.
Do something daring
Always played it safe? Why not take the plunge and do something a little more daring than you’re used to?
If you’re hesitant to venture out onto open water, Stand Up Paddling (or SUPing) in the shallows is a fun way to conquer your fears. When the weather is mild and you’re out on the water with friends, all you’ll be thinking about is the sun on your skin and the sea breeze in your hair. Cabrinha SA in Blouberg offers SUP rentals where you can hire a wetsuit, board and paddle.
Create your own adventures
Life is one big adventure, and Cape Town has us spoiled for choice when it comes to opportunities for little adventures.
Whether you take the family for an early (or full moon) hike up Lion’s Head, a picnic in Greenpoint Park or an exploration walk through Cecilia Forest in Constantia, there’s something exciting for the whole family.
Make a list of your potential 2019 adventures and schedule them in. Memory making is guaranteed.
Laughter truly is the best medicine. It’s easy to get bogged down by the serious things in life. What matters is that we bounce back with a positive, upbeat attitude.
Look for ways to add a little laughter to your day. Here are some fun suggestions.
Create space for fun
Download some comedy podcasts to your smartphone and listen to them on your way to and from work – they’re sure to make your commute a lot more fun.
Check out laugh-out-loud TV comedies like Impractical Jokers, Brooklyn 99, The Goldbergs and more.
Compile an ultimate family movie list with all your favourite comedies and schedule regular movie nights.
You’ll be rolling on the floor laughing in no time.
Plan fun activities
A family game of Hint Hunt in Cape Town is an absolute winner.
Dinner and a show always goes down well at Cape Town Comedy Club at the V & A Waterfront.
If you’re keen for a night in, giggles are guaranteed with a game of 30 Seconds, Speak Out or a family favourite, Twister.
A focus on some self-love could be one of the healthy habits that really change the game for you this year.
As Elle Woods said in Legally Blonde, “Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don’t shoot their husbands.” A little drastic, we’ll admit. The point is, vigorous exercise, whatever that looks like to you, is guaranteed to make you feel good.
Indoor rock climbing is also a great activity to work up a sweat, build strength and meet new people.
It’s important to remember that self-care doesn’t mean you are being selfish. It just means you’re taking time to pause, re-calibrate and unwind.
For you, that could be to go for that muscle-melting massage once every few months. Smoothe Beauty Bar at Eden on the Bay or on Kloof offers a range of stress-relieving treatments. An early morning walk on the beach with a coffee after the school run could be just what you need to unwind. Or maybe it’s a warm soak in the tub after a stressful day to take the edge off.
In other words, whatever will help you take guilt-free time for yourself, do it. Taking care of YOU is one of the best healthy habits you can do for yourself this year!
