3. Ariel’s Mermaid Tail from The Little Mermaid
Every little girl’s dream was and still is to be a mermaid, and especially the red headed princess from ‘Under the Sea’ with her decorative starfish hairclip in her hair. This can be bought from Big Bay Seashells Company, located next to Boska Fashion at Eden on the Bay Mall.
There are two pieces to this outfit, namely the purple clam halter neck and the green mermaid tail. We got our tail inspiration from ‘Shabby Beach Nest’ who made an adorable Ariel tail for her daughter.

You will need a range of fabrics for this costume and Nicole from ‘Shabby Beach Nest’ recommends stretchy fabric that allows your child to walk easily and not get tired too quickly.
For the mermaid tail
- Green tulle (preferably darker)
- Green stretchy fabric
- Green elastic sequins (for the green belt)
- Green nylon thread
- Sewing machine
- Measuring tape
For the starfish hairclip
- Hair clip
- Starfish (buy from Big Bay Seashells Company at Eden on the Bay Mall)
- Sponge or ribbon
- Glue gun
For the purple clam top
For a more conservative look, paint the purple clams on a white T-shirt (as pictured below). If you want to go the authentic route, you can use a purple bikini top and glue a clam shaped creation on top.
Undoubtedly one of the cutest outfits for the little ones, this outfit is a tad on the difficult side and will require some form of sewing. If you do not own a sewing machine (or would rather not attempt) purchase four pairs of nylon tights in the same colour as the material that can be stuffed with stuffing.
You can purchase nylon tights and sewing kits from the Pick ‘n Pay located inside the Eden on the Bay Mall. Take a gander inside String Beads for an assortment of beads and materials to take your costume to the next level.
While a more complicated design, the final look is so completely adorable, all will remember and marvel at your great craftsmanship (thank you, YouTube tutorials and Pinterest!).
This cute outfit can be attempted in a variety of ways but we have chosen the design below with tentacles attached at the hip as it is relatively simple to master and many items can be easily found. Purchase the beanie from Tiffany and ? Boutique for an adorable finish to your ensemble.

- Material of your choosing
- Matching beanie (excess fabric can be used as well)
